Sabathia Pinch Hits in Playoff Game

This probably didn't really merit a fan shot, but it's pretty great:
CC had a pinch hit appearance for Jeff Suppan in the third inning today. He struck out.

Hoynes scouts the Tribe for 09

This article appeared in today's (Sunday's) PD. It contains, among other things, an unnamed scout's appraisal of some the younger players on whom the Indians will "count" next year. There's been some good discussion on this site of the limits of scouts' opinions, which are often subjective and are particularly hard to read if you don't know who the guy is, as in this case. But, a couple of things here surprised me a little: the scout is pretty lukewarm about Asdrubal's play at short this year and seems generally critical of his range. Maybe that's a reaction to his being "out of shape," but I wondered if that was actually something that the data bear out. The scout is also more enthusiastic about Zach Jackson than about some of the other Indians young lefties (he seems to like Laffey too). I guess if the comparison is to Scott Lewis and Sowers, that's not too surprising, but many people saw Jackson as just a fill in for this year; the scout suggests he may be a little better than that. I hope he's right!

One thing the scout says that sounds familiar: he advocates playing Victor at first and underlines Garko's limitations.

Brantley it is.

Apparently, the decision on the PTBNL has been made.

Will Carroll

Will Carroll (7:24:45 PM PT): Every time I see Casey Blake play third, I think to myself that he ranges to his left about as much as any 3B I've seen. Is there any stat that would tell me if this is actually the case?

Is there any wonder why I take everything I hear from Will Carroll with a box of salt? (Quote is 3/4 of the way down in the chat)

Bryson Undergoing Labrum Surgery

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere. If it has, please delete. Although Bryson pitched in August, he felt sore after his appearance and will undergo labrum surgery. He is expected to be out 6-9 months.

This is not good. The recovery rate on labrum surgery is far lower than other operations that pitchers have.

More plunking

The definitive guide to 103 HBP ... a few notable items:

• Seriously high leverage: 44 of the 103 HBP came on two-strike counts!
• The record was set despite Sizemore and Garko combining for 11 fewer HBP than they did in 2007.
• Verlander hit an Indian six times, twice as many as any other pitcher.
• The Tigers hit the Indians 21 times, next highest team only had 12. The Indians hit the Tigers only 7 times, and probably three of those were intentional. Five different Tigers delivered their first career HBP to an Indian this season.
• Out of 72 different pitchers plunking an Indian this season, not one was a former Indian, unless you count Foulke.

Why This Award Isn't Named After Derek Jeter Is Beyond Me

But The Captain wasn't even nominated for the 2008 Pepsi Clutch Performer Award.

Cliff Lee is among the nominees however. So, in the words of the Greater Chicago Democratic Party - vote early and vote often!

SLewis Up for Rookie of the Month

Scott Lewis is one of six nominees for the MLB Rookie of the Month in September.

The last of the four video highlights reviewing his accomplishments is probably the strongest piece of support for his candidacy, and a testament to his versatility and guile.

I didn't think Scotty Lew had finished a game, so I was surprised to hear Underwood say "Swiiing and a miss as Lewis strikes him out. The game is over ...", not to mention the fact that he apparently decided to pitch right-handed to that batter... On closer inspection, his hair had been trimmed as well, and he'd changed his number to 50. Sneaky SLewi...
